Use of hot air oven-dry heat sterilization

Equipment like laboratory glassware and metalware are usually sterilized by hot air oven. It can produce up to 200°C temperature. For sterilization 171°C is used for 20-30 min. Dry heat usually destroys microbes by oxidation of their proteins and ultimately incineration.

Procedure

  1. Wrap the washed and air-dried equipment in craft paper or aluminum foil, preferably in small bundles.
  2. Place the bundles in specified trays and adjust in the hot air oven chamber so that these don’t touch the walls of the hot air oven.
  3. Close the chamber and turn on the supply and adjust the specified time and temperature required.
  4. After completion, turn off the electric supply and remove the tray.
  5. Allow the equipment to cool before manipulation.
