Use of hot air oven-dry heat sterilization
Equipment like laboratory glassware and metalware are usually sterilized by hot air oven. It can produce up to 200°C temperature. For sterilization 171°C is used for 20-30 min. Dry heat usually destroys microbes by oxidation of their proteins and ultimately incineration.
Procedure
- Wrap the washed and air-dried equipment in craft paper or aluminum foil, preferably in small bundles.
- Place the bundles in specified trays and adjust in the hot air oven chamber so that these don’t touch the walls of the hot air oven.
- Close the chamber and turn on the supply and adjust the specified time and temperature required.
- After completion, turn off the electric supply and remove the tray.
- Allow the equipment to cool before manipulation.
