Determination of moisture/dry matter (D.M) in a feed sample

Apparatus

  • Electric weighing balance
  • Desiccator
  • Hot air oven
  • Petri dish

Procedure

  1. Take a petri dish, already washed and dried in a hot air oven, and record the weight of the Petri dish.
  2. Put the feed sample is an already weighed petri dish and record the weight of the feed sample.
  3. Then place the petri dish along with the sample in a hot air oven (65-70o C) for 24 hours.
  4. Take out the petri dish containing sample and place in a desiccator for 3-5 minutes and record the weight. Again put the petri dish along with the feed sample in a hot air oven for 4-6 hours. Take out the petri dish containing sample and place in a desiccator for 3-5 minutes and record the loss in weight. Continue this procedure until a constant weight is obtained.
  5. The actual weight of the feed sample (at step 2) minus the constant weight in step 4 will give the loss in weight (moisture). Calculate the %age of moisture in the feed sample.

Precautions

  • Never hold the petri dish at any stage with an uncovered figure.
  • Always use clean, dried paper to hold the petri dish.
