Dehorning

For dehorning, take a caustic stick or liquid nitrogen and burn the epithelium of the horn bud of the calf at 5-10 days of age. The surrounding haired skin will fill the wound and no horn will regenerate, because the surrounding haired skin is not capable of producing a horn dermis.
If a well-developed horn is present and is desired to be removed, a corneal nerve block should be done as follows.
Inject midway between eye and horn just below the frontal crest. If the needle is directed towards the orbit there should be no deeper injection in one spot. Or if the needle is directed towards the horn it should be in a fan-shaped s/c injection. The horn should be removed close to the base and the superficial temporal artery should be ligated or pressed with the help of an artery forceps, otherwise, stumps will ramify and bleeding will be difficult to stop. (Misshapen horn may grow)
