Determination of coagulation time

Coagulation time

If blood is removed from the body and kept in a glass capillary tube or a test tube, it coagulates, forming a jelly-like mass. The time elapses between the withdrawal of blood and clot formation is the coagulation time.

The drop method

  1. Make a deep skin puncture and take a drop of blood on a clean and dry glass slide.
  2. Draw a pin through the tube every 30 seconds.
  3. Note the time when fibrin threads adhere to the pin and move it out of the blood.

Result

Time elapse between placing the blood drop on the slide and the formation of fibrin threads is noted.
