Dairy Breeds of cattle

Milch breed: It means dairy breeds.

1. Sahiwal

It is also called lola. It has 16 different strains due to 16 different colors.

Habitat

Sahiwal, Multan , Okara and Pakpatan

Physical characteristics

  • Medium-sized with a fleshy body.
  • Females have reddish dun color while male's orbits, eyes, shoulder, dewlap and hindquarter have dark areas.
  • Males have stumpy horns and most females are dehorned.
  • They have loose skin with voluminous dewlap and sheath (near to penis in bull and udder in females)., hump is large in male and small in females, tail switch is black in color.
  • Udder is strong and large, and occasionally have white spots.
  • Milk yield is 1500-2200 liters per lactation. Milk fat is 4.5%, weight of female is 300-350 kg and male is 450-550 kg (range 400-500 kg). More than 1000 kg weight is also recorded.
  • Ears are large and dropping.


2. Red Sindhi

Habitat

Originated from the mountainous  region of Mehal Kohistan and spread over the parts of Karachi, Thatta, Dadu, and home tract extends to irrigated area of Hyderabad, arid brace of Lasbella district. in Balochistan. Males are used for agriculture and meat purpose.

Physical characteristics

  • Medium-sized with a compact build and red body cover. Lasbella strain is darker in color.
  • Head has bulge (Forehead has an angle). 
  • The color of bull is likely to be darker at the shoulder. It has a large head with occasional bulge in the forehead.
  • Horns are thick and stumpy in males but thin in females.
  • Ears are fine and small.
  • Weight is 300-350 kg in females and 400-500 kg in males.
  • Hump is well developed in males and nominal in females.
  • Dewlap is moderate in both.
  • Sheath is pendulous in males but nominal in females.
  • Hindquarters are round and dropping.
  • Tail switch is black.
  • Udder is strong and medium-sized.
  • Milk yield is 1200-2000 liters per lactation.
  • Milk fat is 4.5%. 
  • Males are used for agriculture and meat purpose.

3. Cholistani

Habitat

Desert area of Bahawalpur, adjoining area of Bahalnagur and Rahimyar khan disct.

Physical characteristics

  • Large-sized flabby with short legs, small horns, and long ears.
  • Hump is well developed in males. The dewlap is large in both.
  • Speckled red-brown or white all over the body. Sheath is pendulous in males.
  • The tail switch is black and they have medium-sized udder.
  • Milk yield is 1200-1800 liters and weight is 350-450 kg in females and 450-550 kg in males. It is originated through a cross of local non-descript cattle with Sahiwal.
  • Males are used for draft and meat purposes.
