Estrus cycle



Ovulation

The process of releasing oocyte from mature graffian follicle is called ovulation.

Estrus

Is related to heat.

Capacitation

Changes in the sperm during its movement in the female reproductive tract and becomes able to fertilize the sperm is called capacitation.

Estrus cycle or period

Following are the definitions of the estrus cycle
  1. It is a period in which a female is receptive to its male partner.
  2. The interval from one estrus to the subsequent estrus is called the estrus cycle or the interval between the two consecutive estrus period. Its duration is 21 days.
  3. The term estrus cycle is referred to as the cyclic occurrence of physical and endocrinological events associated with folliculogenesis, ovulation, and luteolysis in adult female animals. Generally, the estrus cycle is the interval between two consecutive estrus periods.
  4. The Estrus cycle is referred to or involves different sexual activities which start with the production of one or more follicles on the ovary and terminate by the shedding one or more ova. If fertile mating occurs, the pregnancy is ensured otherwise the cycle will repeat itself.
Estrus cycle consists of the following 4 phases on the basis of physiology
  1. Pro-estrus
  2. Estrus
  3. Metestrus
  4. Diestrus
Estrus cycle consists of two phases on the basis of structure
  1. Follicular phase; consists of Pro-estrus and estrus.
  2. Luteal phase; consists of Met estrus and diestrus.
